Horoscope Zodiac: Rashi, Naming Letters and Baby Names
Families often ask, “Which zodiac sign goes with this name?” In Hindu naming traditions, the starting sound of a name may be chosen from a birth chart. This guide explains that custom in simple language and helps you find names to discuss with your family.
First, an important difference: a name-based association is not a calculation of someone’s birth sign. A person may have a name that was chosen for family reasons, without any astrological link.
Rashi, nakshatra and pada: three useful words
Rashi means a zodiac sign. In the birth-based naming tradition described here, it usually refers to the sign occupied by the Moon at birth. This is often called the Janma Rashi or Moon sign.
Nakshatra is a lunar division used in Hindu astrology. Each of the 27 nakshatras has four parts called padas. A recommended naming syllable is commonly linked to the Moon’s nakshatra and pada, which is more specific than the broad rashi.
A panchang or birth chart uses the birth date, time and place for this traditional calculation. This article does not calculate a birth chart. The Drik Panchang reference below explains the naming-sound method.
Is this the same as a Western zodiac sign?
Usually, a Western newspaper horoscope means a Sun sign, often based on the tropical zodiac. Hindu birth-chart naming commonly uses the sidereal Moon position. The systems and the celestial body being considered differ, so the signs may differ too. A list of Western birthday date ranges should not be used as a Hindu Moon-sign naming chart.
Which starting sounds go with each rashi?
The following is a commonly used nakshatra-based grouping written in simple Roman letters. Regional panchangs and transliterations can differ. Long and short vowels, dental and retroflex consonants, and sounds written as Na, Nga or Gya may look similar in English while being different in the original script. Confirm the exact sound if you are following a particular ceremony.

Why can the same English letter appear under several signs?
English D can represent several Indian-language sounds. T can also stand for different consonants. The first letter alone loses information. Even sounds written alike in English may be different in a regional script. This is why “all D names have one rashi” is not a reliable rule.
For example, the naming sound La is commonly grouped with Mesha (मेष), and Ra with Tula (तुला). That does not prove that every person called Lalita or Raghav was born with that Moon sign. The name might not have been chosen from a birth chart at all.
A simple way to choose a name
- Decide whether your family wants to follow a birth-chart naming custom.
- If so, confirm the birth details and recommended syllable using your family’s tradition.
- Browse the boy or girl list for names that sound right. English alphabet sections are a browsing aid, not an automatic horoscope result.
- Check pronunciation and meaning in the original language.
- Say the full name aloud and choose the spelling you want to use consistently.
Can I choose a different starting letter?
Many families choose a name for its meaning, a relative, a deity, a place or personal preference. Some use a ceremonial name and a different everyday name. Discuss what matters to your own family; these naming associations are customs, not a requirement for every Hindu child.
What does a horoscope say about personality?
Astrological traditions attach symbolic qualities to signs. These are cultural beliefs, not established scientific predictions of a child’s personality or future. A name or sign does not determine a child’s abilities, choices or worth.
