German Subjunctive Mood
The German Subjunctive Mood (Konjunktiv) is an advanced but fascinating topic. It's used to express hypothetical situations, wishes, politeness, and indirect speech. It often translates to English with "would," "could," "might," or "should."
There are two main forms you need to know:
-
Konjunktiv II (Subjunctive II): For hypotheticals, wishes, and polite requests.
-
Konjunktiv I (Subjunctive I): Primarily for indirect speech.
1. Konjunktiv II (The "Would" Form - Hypothetical)
This is the most common subjunctive. It talks about things that are not real: wishes, dreams, hypothetical scenarios, and polite questions.
How to Form Konjunktiv II
A. For most verbs:
Take the Präteritum (Simple Past) stem and add an umlaut (ä, ö, ü) where possible, plus the special Konjunktiv II endings.
Endings: -e, -est, -e, -en, -et, -en
| Verb | Präteritum Stem | Konjunktiv II | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| haben (to have) | hatte | ich hatte | I would have |
| sein (to be) | war | ich wäre | I would be |
| werden (to become) | wurde | ich würde | I would become |
| können (can) | konnte | ich könnte | I could |
| müssen (must) | musste | ich müsste | I would have to |
| sollen (should) | sollte | ich sollte | I should |
| wollen (want) | wollte | ich wollte | I would want |
Examples:
-
Ich hätte gern mehr Zeit. (I would like to have more time.)
-
Was wären Sie, wenn Sie kein Lehrer wären? (What would you be if you weren't a teacher?)
-
Ich könnte dir helfen. (I could help you.)
B. The "Würde"-Construction (The Common Workaround)
For many other verbs (especially those that don't take an umlaut well), it's more common and natural to use a substitute form.
Formula: würde + Infinitive
-
Instead of saying ich kaufte (which sounds old-fashioned), you say:
-
Ich würde das Haus kaufen, wenn ich Geld hätte.
(I would buy the house if I had money.)
-
-
Instead of ich führe, you say:
-
Ich würde nach Berlin fahren.
(I would travel to Berlin.)
-
This "würde" + Infinitive construction is the standard for most verbs in spoken German.
When to Use Konjunktiv II
-
Hypothetical Situations (often with wenn - if):
-
Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich um die Welt reisen. (If I were rich, I would travel around the world.)
-
-
Wishes:
-
Ich wünschte, ich hätte ein Auto. (I wish I had a car.)
-
-
Polite Requests and Questions:
-
Könntest du mir helfen? (Could you help me?)
-
Hättest du einen Moment Zeit? (Would you have a moment?)
-
-
Making Suggestions:
-
Wir sollten früher gehen. (We should leave earlier.)
-
2. Konjunktiv I (The Indirect Speech Form)
This form is used almost exclusively in newspapers, reports, and formal writing to indicate that you are quoting someone else's words indirectly, without claiming they are true.
How to Form Konjunktiv I
Take the stem of the verb in its infinitive form and add the Konjunktiv I endings.
Endings: -e, -est, -e, -en, -et, -en
| Verb | Infinitive Stem | Konjunktiv I (er/sie/es) |
|---|---|---|
| sagen (to say) | sag- | er sage |
| gehen (to go) | geh- | er gehe |
| haben (to have) | hab- | er habe |
| sein (to be) | sei- | er sei |
Examples of Indirect Speech:
-
Direct Speech: Er sagt: "Ich bin müde." (He says: "I am tired.")
-
Indirect Speech (Konjunktiv I): Er sagt, er sei müde. (He says he is tired.)
-
Direct Speech: Sie sagte: "Ich habe kein Geld." (She said: "I have no money.")
-
Indirect Speech (Konjunktiv I): Sie sagte, sie habe kein Geld. (She said she had no money.)
The Key Point: The Konjunktiv I form signals "This is what they said, not necessarily what I believe."
The Problem: Konjunktiv I often looks like the normal present tense.
To avoid confusion, Konjunktiv II is often used in its place for indirect speech, especially in spoken German.
-
Instead of Er sagt, er habe... (which is correct but formal), people often say:
-
Er sagt, er hätte... (using Konjunktiv II)
-
Quick Comparison: Konjunktiv I vs. Konjunktiv II
| Konjunktiv I | Konjunktiv II | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Use | Indirect Speech (formal writing) | Hypotheticals, Wishes, Politeness |
| Example | Er sagt, er arbeite dort. | Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich arbeiten. |
| Translation | He says he works there. | If I had time, I would work. |
Practice Examples
-
How would you politely ask: "Could you close the window?"
-
Könntest du das Fenster schließen?
-
-
Convert to a hypothetical: "If I had time, I would learn Japanese."
-
Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich Japanisch lernen.
-
-
Convert to formal indirect speech: She said, "I am coming."
-
Sie sagte, sie komme.

Summary Cheat Sheet
| Form | Formula | When to Use |
|---|---|---|
| Konjunktiv II | Präteritum Stem + Umlut + Endungen OR würde + Infinitive | Hypotheticals, Wishes, Polite Requests ("would, could, might") |
| Konjunktiv I | Infinitive Stem + Endungen (-e, -est, -e, -en, -et, -en) | Indirect Speech (mainly in writing) |
Key Irregulars (Konjunktiv II):
-
sein → wäre (would be)
-
haben → hätte (would have)
-
werden → würde (would become) - This is the helper for the "würde" construction.
-
Modal Verbs → könnte, müsste, sollte, wollte (could, would have to, should, would want)
In short:
-
For everyday "would" situations, use the Konjunktiv II forms of haben, sein, and the modals, or just use
würde+ Infinitive for any other verb. -
For reporting what someone said in a formal context, you might see Konjunktiv I, but you can often replace it with Konjunktiv II in spoken German.
